8 Recent TV Show Renewals Worth Celebrating After All The Big Cancellations, Including Our Flag Means Death

Now that we’re in the early days of the summer TV season, it’s a little easier to forget the May Cancellation Bloodbath which has left so many shows without a future. (However Magnum IP fans are doing their best to bring the show back after his disappearance from CBS.) And while there have been a handful of other cancellations in the meantime, audiences certainly have plenty to be excited about before June even hits its midpoint. A variety of top-notch series on both linear TV and streaming have been renewed by their respective platforms, including Netflix, Apple TV+, HBO and more.

Let’s take a closer look at 8 of the biggest TV renewals that have been officially confirmed so far in June, starting with Thor: Love and Thunder the full-beard streaming comedy from director Taika Waititi.

Our Flag Means Death Season 2

Historical fiction tends to be more on the dramatic side of the spectrum than other genres, but Earth People creator David Jenkins brought loads of laughs and romantic emotions to the world of pirates with his HBO Max original Our flag means death. With a cast led by Rhys Darby, Taika Waititi, and more hilarious actors, the swashbuckling streamer also boasts some excellent guest stars, including Leslie Jones, Will Arnett, and Nick Kroll. Critics have been kind to Our flag means deathwhich drew praise for its LGBTQ+ elements, and HBO Max must have been impressed with the turnout, as it officially renewed the show for Season 2 on June 1. Fans can presumably expect her to debut in 2023.

A Black Lady Sketch Show Season 4

Anchored by the brilliant verbal and physical comedy of its creator Robin Thede, HBO breaks the guts A dark lady sketch show could air a new episode every week of the year and never outgrow its satirical reception. Season 3, which featured a cameo return from the Season 1 star and Abbott Elementary School creator Quinta Brunson, appeared to wrap up the sketch comedy’s overall narrative centered around stars Thede, Gabrielle Dennis, Skye Townsend and Ashley Nicole Black. Whether or not that actually happened, HBO apparently wasn’t eager to join in on the conclusion, as the network renewed itself. A dark lady sketch show for Season 4 on June 2. Considering Season 3 just wrapped on May 13, we’ll definitely be waiting nearly another year for new episodes to arrive.

What we do in the shadows seasons 5 and 6

The second Taika Waititi-related series to make this list, FX’s horror-tinged comedy What we do in the shadows a book all kinds of hilarious vampiric lore to viewers in its first three seasons. (Thanks in part to some of TV’s most unpredictable guest stars.) The cable network has proven that it loves the series — along with stars Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillen and Mark Proksch — as much as it does. fans officially do. announcing a two-season renewal on June 6, more than a month before the debut of Season 4. As such, fans can now expect Season 5 and Season 6 to sink into our necks in the near or distant future.

Masters of the Universe: Revolution Tracker

Along with its other He-Man and She-Ra-related fare, Netflix delivered Kevin Smith’s anime-inspired series Masters of the Universe: Revelation, which was received quite favorably by critics and viewers alike. (And with Mark Hamill lending his vocal talents as the show’s Skeletor, that’s probably no surprise.) Despite some complaints about the show’s tone and the manipulation of its characters, this final chapter of the MOTU the franchise has clearly attracted enough Netflix subscribers for the service to officially announce a new season in the form of the sequel series Masters of the Universe: Revolution during its Geeked Week promotion.

American Rust revived for season 2

Based on Philipp Meyer’s novel of the same name, american rust debuted on Showtime in September 2021, backed by a talented cast led by Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney. Unlike most of the other shows on this list, however, the crime drama Rust Belt did very well with critics upon its release. Additionally, its nightly broadcasts on Showtime failed to draw more than 400,000 viewers for any of its nine episodes, with the premium cable channel eventually canceling. american rust in January 2022. This cancellation was clearly not permanent, as it was picked up for a second season by Amazon Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) on June 9, as it continues to build its slate of original projects.

The boys season 4

Currently in the middle of its third season, which has now fully brought Supernatural veterinarian Jensen Ackles in chaos, The boys was one of Amazon Studios’ most attention-grabbing hits, thanks in part to its bloody superhero mayhem, and also for its efforts to be the most extreme television show ever. (This Termite sceneamirite?) With plenty of comic book source material yet to be pulled for showrunner Eric Kripke & Co., the darkly comedic Prime Video series was officially renewed for Season 4 on June 10. Given how heavy the show’s effects are, it’s hard to say when the next batch of episodes will arrive, or when the next spin-off series will debut.

Schmidadon! Season 2

Television musicals are generally limited to one-off specials as opposed to episodic series, but recent years have seen those standards change. Apple TV+ delivered a sub-genre winner with the surreal romance-driven comedy Schmidadon!with Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong leading a stellar cast through its love letter to 1940s musicals. Thankfully, the streaming service went public on June 10 with news that Schmidadon! will return for a second season that parodies musical projects from the ’60s and ’70s as the couple visits “Schmicago.” Fans don’t even have to wait to hear about the new cast members, who will now include Titus Burgess and Patrick Page as series regulars. The majority of Season 1 co-stars, including Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming, will also return.

Squid Game Season 2

The World Was A Different Place During The First Half Of September 2021, Before Hwang Dong-hyuk’s Horror Thriller squid game became arguably the biggest TV show of the streaming era. With billions and billions of minutes watched by millions of fans around the world, squid game is unquestionably one of Netflix’s flagship series, so the lack of renewal news following its global success was surprising to say the least. Especially since the early development of future episodes has been teased by the studio and the show’s creator, while the show has become one of the streaming service’s friendliest originals. But no longer need to wait since the series was officially renewed on June 12 for a season 2 which introduce Cheol-su, Young-hee’s boyfriend.
