Acclaimed author RL Stine to headline Shreve Memorial Library Children’s Book Festival


SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – This year, the Children’s Book Festival will get a little spooky as award-winning young reader horror writer RL Stine comes to Shreveport on May 7.

The family event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the LSU campus and is free to the public. Illustrators, authors, costumed characters, interactive games and activities for all ages will be there.

of Stine”Goose bumpsThe series came to define horror for a generation of young readers, selling over 400 million copies in the United States alone. The books have been transformed into hit tv series in the 1990s which ran for 4 seasons. In 2015 and 2018, two blockbuster movies featuring Jack Black were inspired by the series. His “street of fear“The books have become a popular series of teen fiction. Autographs will be available from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. In the auditorium of the LSU Shreveport University Center at 2:30 p.m., Stine will host a discussion with an author and a book.

National award-winning authors Jennifer L. Holm, Kwame Mbaliaand Brenda Maier will be presented at the festival. Over 20 local authors and illustrators, including fan favorites Jasper Award, author of “Zombie Asockalypse”, will be available to meet in the festival tents throughout the day. Children can have their books signed, meet their favorite authors and see some of their favorite stories come to life on stage.

Costumed characters will make appearances at the festival, including Pete the Cat, Biscuit, Winnie the Pooh, Elephant and Piggie, Bad Kitty, Cookie Mouse and Curious George. Children will be able to take pictures with their favorite characters.

Literacy Lane will provide free interactive games to improve literacy skills offered by community organizations. These activities promote a love of reading and lifelong learning and provide families with an opportunity to learn about the services offered by these organizations.

Food and beverages are provided by LSU Shreveport Auxiliary Services. Booths will be available throughout the festival, offering burgers, hot dogs, nachos, pizza, fruit bowls, pretzels, strawberry shortcakes and drinks. Food tickets are $1 each and presented at the booth to purchase items.

  • 10:00 a.m. Festival opens (star and local author tents, literacy aisle, activities, concessions)
  • 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. RL Stine Meet & Greet and Book Signing (Author’s Tent)
  • 10:30 a.m. – 11:20 a.m. Author Performance – Jasper Price, Zombie Asockalypse (Auditorium)
  • 11:30 a.m. – 12:20 p.m. Author Performance – Brenda Maier, Little Red Fort, Peeping Beauty and Little Blue Bridge (Auditorium)
  • 12:30 p.m. – 1:20 p.m. Author performance – Kwame Mbalia, Tristan Strong series, The Emperor’s Last Door and Black Boy Joy (Auditorium)
  • 1:30 p.m. – 2:20 p.m. Performance by the author – Jennifer L. Holm, Our Only May Amelia, Penny from Heaven, Turtle in Paradise, Babymouse series, Sunny series and the Squish series (Auditorium)
  • 2:30 – 3:30 Author Performance – RL Stine, Goosebumps series and Fear Street series (Auditorium)
  • 4:00 p.m. Closing of the festival
