Deputy headmaster of Gary Road Primary School has been sacked after reading a children’s book

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – A vice principal was fired last week after reading a children’s book called ‘I need a NEW ASS!’ in a class… and he doesn’t understand why.

Last week Gary Road Elementary School Deputy Principal Toby Price was fired after he read the children’s book to a group of second graders.

“My boss had asked me to set up a Zoom with the second grade classes and the principal of the school where they are going to be next year and she was going to read to them. And she didn’t show up. “Said Price. “My boss told me, ‘Go ahead and read.’ I grabbed one of my favorite books I had nearby, read it to them. It’s a funny and silly book.

Price said he’s read this book in previous school districts, but never heard a denial or complaint.

“I didn’t hesitate to read it because I had never had a problem with it before. There are other books that have much more suggestive material that are much more widely accepted,” Price explained.

According to Price’s termination letter from the Hinds County School District Superintendent, Price showed “lack of professionalism and impaired judgment” in choosing the book and for these reasons he is fired.

3 On Your Side asked the school district for a statement on Price’s firing, but the superintendent declined to comment.

“I just think, you know, it was a pretty harsh reaction. I have been in education for 20 years. I never had a disciplinary sanction in my file and I did not do it to be late. So I was blown away,” Price said.

In response to Price’s situation, children’s book authors, teachers and librarians messaged and posted on social media declaring the book to be “hilarious and sweet”, “joyful and fun” and “light-hearted”. and that the Superintendent’s decision was wrong.

Now Price hopes to reverse their decision, get her job back, and teach others that fun books are necessary in education.

“If you don’t let kids see funny and silly books, they won’t stick around long enough to find out that books can be anything other than funny and silly. You have to hook them with the funny and silly stuff. And that’s what I’ve always done. That’s what this book was for,” Price said.
