Dune expands the Atreides/Harkonnen war with Brutal Revenge in a new series



BOOM! Studios continues to expand the universe of Frank Herbert’s Dune novel, this time with a look at Gurney Alleck’s time on Arrakis.

A new miniseries BOOM! studios will expand the universe of the best-selling sci-fi franchise Dunes. Coming in May 2022, Dune: The Waters of Kanlywill bring comic book readers the untold story of Atreides Lieutenant Gurney Alleck, and how he survived for years on the merciless planet Arrakis in order to avenge the hatred of the Arkonnens.

Dunes is one of the most influential science fiction novels of all time, written by visionary author Frank Herbert. Winner of the Hugo Prize and the first Nebula Prize, Dunes spawned a rich universe comprised of a series of bestselling novels, some of which were written by Frank’s son Brian, and numerous live-action adaptations, including the Legendary Pictures 2021 film directed by Denis Villeneuve which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. DunesThe brand’s emphasis on political intrigue, environmentalism, and the relationship between technology, religion, and economics has left an everlasting influence on the world of science fiction.

Abrams ComicArts has secured the rights to publish a trilogy of graphic novel adaptations of Herbert’s novel Dunes, with the first released in 2020. BOOM! The studios began publishing a prequel comic, Dune: House Atreidesin 2020, and has now announced an all-new four-issue series, in partnership with Herbert Properties LLC and in full coordination with Abrams. Dune: The Waters of Kanly takes place during the events of the original Dunes novel. After the Battle of Arrakeen, the death of Duke Leto, and the disappearance of his son Paul and his wife Jessica, the Atreides forces are dispersed. Atreides warmaster Gurney Halleck takes refuge with spice smugglers, vowing revenge on the Harkonnens who destroyed the family he was sworn to serve. The waters of Kanly will tell the story of Halleck, played by Josh Brolin in the 2021 film adaptation, before his fateful reunion with Paul Atreides years later.

The series is written by the same team behind Dune: House AtreidesBrian Herbert, who continued his father’s work on Dunes franchise after his death, in addition to authoring his own series of best-selling novels, and Kevin J. Anderson, who wrote several novels in the Star Wars, X Filesand Dunes universe. The waters of Kanly will be illustrated by Francesco Mortarino, colored by Raúl Angulo and lettered by Ed Dukeshire. The main cover will be provided by Christian Ward (something kills children), with variant covers by Massimo Carnevale (Les Merveilles, Y: The Last Man), Junggeun Yoon (Magic), and InHyuk Lee (Amazing Spiderman).

BOOM! Studios has done a fantastic job releasing critically acclaimed original series such as something kills children and The many deaths of Laila Starrand popular licensed properties including Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Magic. Dunes is the latest addition to this list, and the Boom! studios promises to be a treat for fans of Frank Herbert’s work and for comic book readers in general. Dune: The Waters Of Kanly #1 will be available in May 2022 in paper and digital versions.
