July 25, 2022 – American author and Puerto Rican native Frank Paquito Lopez has explored the Caribbean island’s turbulent history in a new novel titled ‘Sotomayor’.

Named after Christobal Sotomayor, the second governor under Juan Ponce de Leon, a Spanish explorer and former ruler of Puerto Rico. The romance novel recounts many facts about the Conquistadors and Taino Indians in Puerto Rico that are unknown to the public , including the real impact of Cristobal’s colon on the islands.

Frank Lopez is also a chef and sculptor. At age 20, Frank emigrated from Puerto Rico to New Hampshire USA. There he began working in the kitchen of the Mount Washington Hotel in the White Mountains. It took him several years but eventually he became Chef Garde Manger at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach Florida which is one of the best 5 star hotels in the world. He participated in many ice sculpting competitions across the United States, where he won numerous medals. He eventually moved to Chicago to work at the five-star Ritz Carlton.

Eventually, he moved to California to the exclusive Black Hawk country club. While there, he joined UC Berkley School of Art, learned bronze sculpture, and produced a life-size black hawk and Kodiak bear, among other things.

After 10 years he moved to Kentucky where his wife is from. There he retired as executive chef at the Sheraton of Lexington. As soon as he retired from his beloved kitchen, Frank decided to pursue his second dream; become an author. He wrote his first book ‘Mis Recuerdos de Indiera Fria’. It was about his childhood and growing up on the coffee plantation in the mountains of Maricao, Puerto Rico, where he was born and raised. Later he returned to Puerto Rico. At some point he read the book “My Life” by Sonia Sotomayor. Because of his surname, he started digging into history and came up with the idea of writing a novel with Sotomayor’s name in mind.

While Sotomayor is considered a work of fictional romance, all of the major events in the 160-page novel are based on true stories and historical facts.

In addition to his knowledge as a chef of international cuisine and an accomplished sculptor and decorator, Frank is a passionate composer of Puerto Rican folk Decima, with over 200 original poems written.
