Freshman Year Fits Into The MCU Revealed (Exclusive)

Spider-Man: Year One Marvel fans got pretty excited during Marvel Studios’ animation panel at Comic-Con in San Diego this past weekend. The series is advertised as taking place before Captain America: Civil War, following Peter Parker through New York with characters like Doc Ock, Norman Osborn, Harry Osborn, Nico Minoru, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, Doctor Strange, and more. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Earth-616 history seems to have plotlines that would contradict Spider-Man having interacted with these characters in the past. Thus, the question “How Spider-Man: Year One fit into the main MCU timeline?” popped up and the answer seems to be, “It doesn’t.”

Brad Winderbaum has played a vital role at Marvel Studios over the years, serving as an executive producer on titles such as Thor: Love and Thunder, What if…?, and more with producer credits on past projects. Previously as an executive of production and development at Marvel Studios, Winderbaum is now head of streaming for the franchise and has appeared on the Marvel Studios Animation Panel, where looks at Spider-Man: Year One were presented (as well as the next I am Groot series of short films). In promotion of I am GrootWinderbaum spoke to ComicBook.com in an interview about the Phase zero YouTube channel, where he talked about Spider-Man: Year One’its place in the MCU.

“Well, like we said, in the panel it follows the pattern that you see in [Captain America:] Civil war“Winderbaum said of the animation. Spider Man series. “Until Peter retrieves the broken Blu-ray player from the trash and he walks into his department for the infamous moment when Tony Stark is waiting for him to offer him the austere internship and take him to Berlin. But because of the things happening in the multiverse due to new random events it’s not Tony Stark waiting for him there it’s Norman Osborn and it sends his life on an unexpected trajectory that bumps him into a lot of characters unexpected in the Marvel universe.

Originally presented as taking place before the events of Captain America: Civil War (which always seems true), Spider-Man: Year One looks like it will also take the angle of a What if…? episode as an entire series. On this show, it seems the question will be, “What if Norman Osborn becomes Peter Parker’s mentor instead of Tony Stark?” The answer includes interactions with characters like Daredevil and Amadeus Cho, neither of whom were mentioned in Peter Parker’s MCU journey to Earth-616 (as it was tagged in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness). Whether or not this will impact the story of Earth-616 is unclear, though cross-universe incursions seem imminent with Avengers: Secret Wars being heralded as the conclusion of the multiverse saga. Any stories told by Marvel Studios across the multiverse can end up crossover with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, if the writers see fit.

Spider-Man: Year One is set to debut on Disney+ in 2024, with a season 2 already underway in the form of Spider-Man: Year Two. There’s no word yet on who will be providing the voice of Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, or other characters from the series. Jeff Trammel from Craig and the brook writes and produces the series. Marvel Studios Animation’s next project is I am Groota series of five shorts coming to Disney+ on August 10. telling stories set between the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and its post-credits scene.
