A new description of Soldier Boy for The boys Season 3 explains how the Supe differs from its comic book counterpart.
Supernatural alum Jensen Ackles will portray the series’ twist on Marvel’s Captain America in the upcoming season. According to SFX Magazine, what makes this live-action depiction different from the comic book source material is that he “bulged up and got an attitude” on the superhero show Prime Video. Showrunner Eric Kripke also thought Ackles was capable of playing the role after being able to “go dark” during their experience working together on Supernaturalwhich starred Ackles and Jared Padalecki as the monster-hunting Winchester brothers.
In The boys comic book series created by writer Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson for WildStorm Productions and later published by Dynamite Entertainment, there are actually two different versions of Soldier Boy. The first modern version of the character debuted in the Herogasm mini-series, an event that The boys Season 3 will adapt in its sixth episode. This version of Soldier Boy is Payback’s least intimidating leader, who shouts the names of US states during battle and is often overshadowed by Stormfront.
As for the second version of Soldier Boy (although it existed before in The boys‘ timeline), he was one of the first Vought American superheroes sent into battle during World War II, but his team eventually revealed the location of American troops. He was killed along with the entire battalion except for Greg Mallory, who went on to found The Boys. The show seems to take inspiration from Soldier Boy’s World War II outfit for Ackles’ outfit, featuring a green suit as opposed to the modern red, white, and blue suit.
The live-action Soldier Boy will also be someone who originally fought in World War II and who wakes up in today’s world to find that he is no longer Vought’s main hero. That title is now held by Homelander (Antony Starr), who possesses powers similar to DC’s Superman. According to Ackles, the first words that will come out of Soldier Boy when he sees Homelander will be “What the fuck?” However, while Soldier Boy doesn’t have any significant powers to rival Homelander in the comics, the official trailer for The boys Season 3 reveals that he will have explosive abilities capable of leveling buildings in the series.
The first two seasons of The boys and its animated spin-off, The Boys Presents: Devilishare available to stream on Prime Video. The boys Season 3 will premiere on June 3 on the platform.
