Is Don Cheadle’s war machine a secret skull?

At the center of the next Secret Invasion The TV series and comic book storyline that inspired it is that the Skrulls have infiltrated key positions around the world and posed as powerful people. A big part of the original comic book story was also that countless superheroes had also been replaced by Skrulls, something the MCU probably can’t replicate to any great extent given the show’s cast. and their greater continuity. There’s at least one Avenger present who might very well not be what he thinks he is, Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes, aka War Machine. Let’s find out below.

The first trailer for Secret Invasion came out on D23 and offered a look at the shapeshifting Skrulls and the series’ massive ensemble. Among the characters featured is Cheadle’s Rhodes, depicted in costume and surrounded by his own security details. Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury asks him if he really knows the people who protect him, planting the seed that they may be Skrulls, but that all seems like smart misdirection, doesn’t it? Wouldn’t it be a bigger surprise for Cheadle to be the Skrull and for Fury to make a mistake trusting him?

It is also interesting to note that at D23, Cheadle remained on stage after the Secret Invasion part of the panel concluded to talk a bit more about their own solo Disney+ series, Armor Wars. As confirmed by Cheadle, Secret Invasion will lead directly to Armor Wars. According to an official announcement regarding the series, “Rhodey fans will see the character in a whole new light,” with the series also featuring “all-new costumes for the hero, complete with different types of armor.”

Now why Secret Invasion drive straight into Armor Wars, a series where Rhodey must deal with the consequences of Tony Stark’s technology falling into the wrong hands? It would be easy for Armor Wars to concoct a reason why this tech fell into the wrong hands but wouldn’t that also do since it happened because Rhodey was replaced by a Skrull and Skrull-Rhodey wasn’t exactly monitoring Stark tech he didn’t even know?

It’s just a theory, but it makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Rhodey is the easiest Avenger to make a Skrull in Secret Invasion since he’s not an integral part of the feature’s plans, and one could easily identify a moment after Endgame that he was swapped with a Skrull.
