At first glance, graphic novels may seem like simple comic books. But they are actually real books, and reading them is real reading.

Here at the Airdrie Public Library (APL), we have a wide selection of graphic novels for a range of ages and reading levels.

At first glance, graphic novels may seem like simple comic books. But they are actually real books, and reading them is real reading. They help your child develop the same skills as a traditional book.

In fact, the combination of words and pictures encourages a deeper learning experience by increasing reading comprehension by seeing and connecting words to a picture that describes them.

Additionally, graphic novels have less text, making them more accessible to hesitant or struggling readers. They are also perfect for English learners.

Yes, they contain graphics, but they also contain complete stories, told sequentially through panels using a combination of words and graphics.

The stories aren’t just about superheroes – they explore a wide range of themes, including fantasy, fiction, historical fiction, biography and non-fiction, using a wide variety of art styles to do so. .

Many, including the fantastic graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang chinese born american and the graphic memoirs of David Small Stitches, have won several impressive awards, such as the Printz Pricing for the literary merit of adolescents and the National Book Honor for Children’s Literature.

Several graphic novels have been adapted into movies that you may have seen, such as Sin City, 300, Ghost World, V for Vendetta, Tank Girl, Red, Atomic Blonde, Road to Perdition, Cowboys and Aliens, Hell Boyand much more.

So if you see your child, teen, or loved one reading a graphic novel and start wishing they were reading a “real” book, remember that graphic novels are, in fact, real reading.
