Lincoln couple co-authors inspirational children’s book

LINCOLN, Maine (WABI) – A husband-wife duo team up to create a children’s book with a special message.

“Just a Kid from Maine” is the latest title from McSea Books, a publishing house owned by Stephanie Mulligan of Lincoln.

Stéphanie first discovered her talent for writing in her early twenties.

“I wrote a poem about The Lucky Catch, a boat I worked on for eight years,” Mulligan said. “Then I read it to my mom and she said, ‘Sounds pretty good! It could be a children’s book.

Eventually, Mulligan turned this poem into his first book, “How to Catch a Guardian”. In 2019, the former college teacher founded her own publishing house, McSea Books, to put her work in the hands of readers.

“I felt like there was a fire lit under me because I had 2,000 pounds in my house,” Mulligan said with a laugh. “I just left Lincoln and drove along the coast. I’ve just been to places from the Lucerne Inn to My Darling Maine, to Sherman’s, of course.

For her latest project, Stéphanie had an idea: to team up with her husband, former UMaine and NFL tight end Matt Mulligan, to tell her life story.

“I said no at the start. I was like, “Nobody wants to hear about it,” Matt Mulligan said.

But Stéphanie managed to convince him to co-write “Just a Kid from Maine”, under one condition.

“I was like, ‘Look honey, I don’t care what else you do, but you’ve got to make sure the muscles are huge!” Matt said. “I said to myself: ‘That’s it! That’s all that matters to me.

They teamed up with Maine artist Rick Parker, whose previous work includes MTV’s “Beavis and Butt-Head” comic. The Mulligans are thrilled with the end result and passionate about the message it shares.

“Just to talk to kids in that age range, it could be middle school, it could be high school, but to show them that, ‘Hey look, you’re from Maine. You can do it. It all depends on how hard you are going to work, ”said Matt Mulligan.

It is this hard work that made Stéphanie a success. In addition, a lot of help from those around him.

“If I didn’t have the support I have, this wouldn’t happen,” said Stephanie. “The good thing is, yeah, it’s one of my passions that came to fruition, but I feel like my family can savor it too. “

“For her, to have this opportunity to accomplish things that show her skills, her intelligence and show that she can do anything. She can take care of three children and build the business empire. She was amazing, ”Matt said of Stephanie.

“Just a Kid from Maine” is available online and at Sherman’s bookstores.

Stéphanie and Matt also book tours to local schools.
