HOULTON, Maine (WAGM) –

A local author of children’s books does his best to stock the pantries in Aroostook County. Brian Bouchard, of NewsSource8, finds out how “Doug the Waterbug” aims to fill the minds and bellies of local children.

“It was Christmas Eve and all the critters came out to play”

Mark Roberts is a man of many titles, author, illustrator, veteran, inventory manager at the Hannaford supermarket, but perhaps one of the most suitable titles would be Philanthropist. Roberts wrote and illustrated his children’s book “Doug the Waterbug’s First Christmas” and, in collaboration with Hannaford’s, donates the proceeds from his book to local pantries in Aroostook County.

“Doug the Waterbug’s First Christmas pretty much speaks for itself, it’s a waterbug, his first Christmas. It’s Christmas Eve and he’s spending time with family and friends having fun, and then it’s all about sharing and helping, ”says Roberts.

An avid painter, Roberts began to write a story to accompany his works. The artwork from the book is currently on display at the Presque Isle Library.

Roberts was first inspired when the Food Pantry in his hometown of Mars Hill lost funding for a year and was unable to provide holiday meals to those in need.

“A few years ago my hometown pantry had a little problem… so they weren’t eligible for food banks, so they went through vacations where they couldn’t buy the turkeys and hams… and I started fundraising, ”says Roberts

4 pantries across the county will receive proceeds from “Doug the Waterbug’s First Christmas”.
