Maddie Frost has auctioned off the rights to her first graphic novel, Wombats!



Wombats! is the first graphic novel by the author-illustrator Maddie Frost, which tells the story of a couple of wombats Albert and Pickles, and their friend Platters, attack the campsite and confront a Wholly Moon Beast. Both Wombats! books won at auction by Aneeka Kalia at Viking will be released in Spring 2023 and then Spring 2024. Maddie Frost’s Agent Andrea Morrison at Writers House brokered the deal.

Maddie Frost is a children’s author and illustrator from Massachusetts. She has illustrated numerous books, including six book titles illustrated by the author, Wombats being her seventh and first in a comic book format. Last week she saw the publication of an illustrated book Capybara is friends with everyone by HarperKids.

Viking Press (formerly Viking Penguin, also listed as Viking Books) is an American publishing company now owned by Penguin Random House. It was founded in New York on March 1, 1925 by Harold K. Guinzburg and George S. Oppenheim, then acquired by the Penguin Group in 1975. Viking publishes about 75 books a year. He has published both bestselling business fiction and acclaimed literary fiction and nonfiction, and his paperbacks are most often published by Penguin Books. One of the world’s largest literary agencies, New York-based Writers House was founded by Al Zuckermanformer novelist, television writer, and Yale playwriting professor.

The expansion of children’s graphic novels is fueling all sorts of publishers expanding into the comics medium. Right now, it looks like an endless market that’s being tapped into and creating long-time comic book readers for decades to come. It’s not for nothing that children’s graphic novels in bookstores are called the newsstand of the 21st century, and the medium’s future readers are being shaped and created right here, right now.
