“Magic Mountain” by Dubbo

I had the pleasure of speaking with avid illustrator Alex Smith under the pseudonym Dubbo.

Alex Smith is an experienced and versatile illustrator living in the Algarve, who brings her beautiful illustrations to life in her first children’s book ‘The Magic Mountain’.

Alex “Dubbo” Smith was born and raised in Malta and originally came to the Algarve in a motorhome for three years in a row before buying her house here four years ago. Alex fell in love with the Algarve and lives near the Salgados Nature Reserve. She told me that Malta and the Algarve have “many similarities, the relaxed lifestyle, the friendly people, the climate and the vegetation all remind me of my childhood and maybe that’s another reason why I I feel so at home here.”

Alex became an illustrator in her twenties, then taught art at American universities across Europe while doing fun illustrations on the side of many children’s books, including Five Minute Fairy Tales (BNBS), Zoo Story, The Reluctant Hero, 103 Monkeys and Sweet Dreams Lullabies as well as caricatures and greeting cards.

“The Magic Mountain” is a fairy tale about his three grandchildren and is set in a magical little village in Switzerland where Alex lived and worked. “The area of Switzerland that inspired the story is steeped in folklore and I borrowed the legend of Lake Chavonnes and incorporated it into my story.” “The Gardening Theme and The Thin Man I are based on a lively but elderly neighbor whom the family adopted as a grandfather. Human rights, gender equality, anti-racism, kindness and altruism are some of the values that I think are important for children to aspire to, and these have developed naturally. as I wrote.

The story of Magic Mountain begins “high in the Swiss mountains where the village prepares to celebrate its traditional La Nuit des Fées festival. Legend has it that on this night, ordinary humans can access the magical world of fairies. However, such stories went untold for a long time and were almost completely forgotten, until two adventurous, nature-loving boys befriended The Thin Man, an interesting neighbor who loves gardening. . The Thin Man gives them the key to unlock the secrets of the mountain and they enter the magical world of Arcadia…”
