Marvel Comics closed its Next Big Thing panel at San Diego Comic-Con with the teasing of a new project from Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti. Set for release in 2023, not much else is known about the mystery series from Jonathan Hickman’s all-star creative team (x-men, avengers, The Fantastic Four) and Valerio Schiti (AXIS: Judgment Day, Empyrean). However, what is known is that this would be Hickman’s first Marvel project after leaving the X-Men franchise. As for Valerio Schiti, he is busy with Kieron Gillen on AXIS: Judgment Day.
The teaser released by Marvel contains the line “What happens when the powers that be meet the natural order of things?” Hickman was a member of the Next Big Thing panel but didn’t speak until the end, where he revealed how this new work is “Sandman to the Marvel Universe.” The prolific writer also revealed how he’s been working on this series for three years, around the same time he started his X-Men tenure with House X and Powers of X.
“It’s probably too early to talk about my next thing. Especially in a way that would answer your question satisfactorily, but it’s definitely not X-related,” Hickman told AIPT during a question-and-answer session. “In fact, unless I’m coming back to the office to do something later, I will intentionally avoid doing ‘mutant stuff’.”
He continued, “At best it would look like a comment, and at worst something like this would probably read like me ‘writing about’ everyone. And that, obviously, doesn’t interest me at all.”
Other big announcements from Marvel’s Next Big Thing panel include writer Christopher Cantwell wrapping up his Iron Man run with number 650, the Spider-Man / X-Men crossover dark web an/a Avengers Assemble Alpha by Jason Aaron and Bryan Hitch.
