The Avengers have officially disbanded. Whereas Avengers: Endgame makes the fate of most individual Avengers clear after the battle with Thanos, the status of the Avengers organization has been more nebulous. Speaking at Expo D23 on Saturday, during the Marvel portion of the Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, 20th Century showcase, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said the Avengers are no more, leaving a void. that Marvel’s new team, the Thunderbolts, can fill. “Just because there’s no organization like the Avengers anymore, but now we have the Thunderbolts,” Feige said, confirming that the Avengers are no longer an ongoing concern in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This raises questions about the future of the Avengers and what the Avengers titles mean in some of Marvel’s upcoming movies. The MCU’s multiverse saga will end with two back-to-back Avengers films, Avengers: Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. Do these titles mean that a new Avengers team will form? Or is “Avengers” just a way of implying that certain movies are the finales of Marvel’s sagas?
“I think we learn something about every project we do, but as we were preparing, even three years ago here, phase four, which we haven’t fully presented, but most of it, we realized that was very different from Phase One, Two and Three, that there are more projects in fewer years, and so it didn’t feel right, you’re not going to peak every 10 months in an Avengers movie,” Feige told ComicBook.com at San Diego Comic Con. “And each of the films themselves has now become quite significant and is a crossover event in many ways. And after, you know, the creative experience that we had with Infinity War and End of Gameit felt like the capping off of a saga, saving back-to-back Avengers films for the completion of a saga and that’s really what we wanted to showcase today.”
As for the former Avengers, founding members Iron Man and Black Widow both died to defeat Thanos. Captain America has aged and retired. Thor left Earth and is now a father. Hawkeye seems content to leave the superhero life behind to spend time with his family. Hulk remains active and is currently off-world.
Avengers: Kang Dynasty opens in theaters May 2, 2025. Avengers: Secret Wars follows on November 7, 2025.
