One-Punch Man explains why Garou is truly a hero

One-Punch Man unleashed Garou’s most monstrous state yet, but the series’ latest chapter teases that despite all of that, he really is a true hero at heart. The Human Monster saga was the series’ longest arc to date, but it finally came to a head because now that the Monster Association has been taken down, fans can finally see the long-awaited fight between Saitama and Garou. After the two have crossed paths several times before, this is the first time they have traded blows.

As the fight between Saitama and Garou kicks into full swing with the final chapters of the manga, Garou has transformed into a more monstrous state as he grows increasingly frustrated with Saitama’s overwhelming strength. All the while, Saitama has been trying to figure out why Garou considers himself a monster in the first place despite all his displays of outright heroism. This was taken to a whole new level with the new chapter because the more bad Garou tries to be, the more accidentally good he ends up being.

Chapter 161 of One-punch man begins with Saitama trying to figure out what Garou’s end goal really is. Garou has worked with the heroes despite having hunted them before, and Saitama wonders why Garou continues to claim absolute evil despite all the good he has done for children like Tareo. Garou refuses to back down and thus maintains an onslaught of even more monstrous techniques. Saitama crosses them all easily, and the more they fight, the more Garou ends up helping innocent people in surprising ways.

His destruction of a building frees the people trapped below (for which they thank him), he slams Saitama into a volcano eventually saving the people below from his eruption, and as a result Saitama notes that although he doesn’t want to not, Garou ends up helping people. He has good hero instincts, and so Saitama seems to have found his next focus in the fight with Garou as he tries to bring out that heroic side even more.

Garou has demonstrated this more heroic side, but it looks like it will take a quick defeat to save him from his monstrosity. But what do you think?
