After exceeding viewers’ expectations and winning multiple Oscars, Dunes is officially back for more, with the green light from Warner Bros. for a sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s film. Villeneuve’s approach to adapting Frank Herbert’s epic novel has been hotly debated, with diehard fans amazed at how the story has played out on screen so far. According to one of the stars of the film, this feeling should continue with the next Dunes: Part II. During a Cannes Film Festival Q&A, actor Javier Barden said the script for Dune: Part II would bring the franchise’s pieces together in unexpected ways.
“I’ve read the new draft,” Bardem revealed, “and I think they’ve done an incredible job of putting the pieces together in a way that will surprise people. They won’t be surprised [by what happens], obviously, because they’ve read the book, but they’ll be surprised at how they put it together. I was very moved by it. It’s a full film, and we feel its weight, and at the same time [you can enjoy] its spectacular character. [I can’t wait] to go back to the desert with these people, and I’m so happy to go back with Denis, who is one of the greatest directors of all time. He’s a lovely man.”
Dune: part two should also see the return of Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atredies, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck and Zendaya as Chani, with Christopher Walker playing Emperor Shaddam IV, Austin Butler playing Feyd -Rautha, Florence Pugh in negotiations to play Princess Irulan.
“We’ve heard for a few decades that it’s not possible to adapt this book, and that it’s an impossible task. I think that in the back of the studio’s head, it’s still the same!” Villeneuve said Total movie in an interview last year. “So the first thing was to prove that there was a beautiful popular movie that could exist, and I think I proved that – everyone at Warner Bros and Legendary, they’re 100% behind the project. They think it would need a really bad box office result to not have Dune: Part Two, because they love the movie. They’re proud of the movie, so they want the movie to move forward. And they still made half of it. So, you know, I’m very optimistic.”
“I write [Part Two] now, and I feel like I’m eight again,” he added. “It’s very rare for me. It’s the first time I’ve seen it watching one of my films, and I have a moment of deep gratitude, deep joy, and I say, ‘Thank you, life, for allowing me to bring this on the screen.’ [laughs] I don’t know what others will think of it. But I? Denis Villeneuve when he was 14? Thanks.”
