The store won the 2022 Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award. It’s the biggest award given to comic book stores at San Diego Comic-Con
PORTLAND, Oregon – The best comic book store in the world is right here in Portland. “Books with Pictures” just won the highest honor at last weekend’s Comic-Con. Owner Katie Pryde believes the diversity of her store’s content played a role in her victory.
Six years ago, Pryde combined his love for stories and comics to open books with pictures in Southeast Portland.
“Creating a space for people who traditionally don’t have a place in comics — like women, gay people, people of color — and kind of creating a space for these non-traditional geeks,” Pryde said.
The store’s goal is not only to offer the best books, but also the best with diverse content.
“If creators of color post, we wear it, if queer creators post, we wear it,” Pryde explained.
This approach allowed the store to be among the five finalists for the “Will Eisner Spirit of Retail Award”. This is the top comic book store award at San Diego Comic-Con, and Books with Pictures won it this year.
“It means we’re recognized as the best comic book store in the world,” Pryde said.
In the past 10 years, only four Eisner-winning retailers have been in the United States.
“I think I won with this vision of the future, because we’re really looking to do something different in the industry, not just perfect the formula that’s been successful,” Pryde said.
Several other Portland residents cleaned up at the event. This includes author Douglas Wolk who won the 2022 Eisner Award for Best Comic-Related Book with his book “All of the Marvels.”
“Winning an Eisner means my peers recognize what I’ve done and love it,” Wolk said, “and it’s incredibly flattering and honouring.”
“Winning this award really validates the feeling that my vision of what comics can be is one shared even more widely than I thought,” Pryde said.
