Samuel L. Jackson Explains Why He’s Rewriting Nick Fury’s Dialogue For Marvel Projects

Nick Fury is one of the few characters to still exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception. Not only is Fury still around, but he’s still a key character in the franchise, ready to lead the Secret Invasion series on Disney+ next year. Samuel L. Jackson has played Fury from the very beginning, appearing in 11 MCU films so far, and is expected to appear in at least two more. There’s no doubt that Jackson knows the MCU’s version of Fury inside out. So it’s no surprise to learn that the actor will occasionally rewrite some of the character’s dialogue before filming.

When you’ve played a character for 14 years, you tend to know quite a bit about them and how they would talk or act in a given situation. That’s what Jackson thinks of Nick Fury. In a recent interview with ColliderJackson revealed that he would tweak the dialogue here and there to make sure everything was true to the character.

“I’ve been doing Nick Fury for so long, I know what he looks like and I know how he thinks and how he feels,” Jackson said. “I know that writers stay home and write. If the writer is a fan of that stuff – the superhero genre – he knows how to do it. I’ve had directors who have written comics, so when they say, ‘Say it like I wrote it’, you can say, ‘Okay, we’re talking about comics’. Then I’ll have directors saying “Say it like Nick Fury would say it” or “Say it like you like Nick Fury would say it”, which means “Say it like Jules (from pulp Fiction) or Ordell (of Jackie Brown), or one of those clever characters you’ve played before. Help me.’ And I can accept that too.”

“But there are times, when I’m doing or studying the lines for the next day or the scene that we’re doing, that I can say, ‘The writer knows what he means, but he didn’t have “I didn’t say it, so let me help you out” and I’ll write it down,” he continued. “And then the next day when I come in, I’ll pull that person aside and say, ‘Look, I know you wrote this, but that’s a better way to say this as Nick Fury’. , and they’ll go, ‘Oh my God. Well, you’re Nick Fury, so yes.'”

Jackson’s Fury is set to appear in several MCU projects next year. He will have a leading role in Secret Invasion series on Disney+, and he will appear in some capacity in Wondersthe sequel to Captain Marvel.
