Sharjah: His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, opened the second edition of the Emirati Book Fair (EBF) yesterday (Wednesday), marking the occasion with the unveiling of The struggle of the Zend Khans and the descent of powerthe last historical work of His Highness.
The book fair, organized by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) in partnership with the Emirates Writers Union (EWU), runs until April 24 at the SBA headquarters in Sharjah. During the opening ceremony, High Highness, Honorary President of EWU, was seen signing copies of the book for the government officials, authors and Emirati scholars in attendance.
Published by Al Qasimi Publications, The struggle of the Zend Khans and the descent of power includes three chapters, indexes and an explanatory appendix. It is a qualitative addition to the extensive historical research work of Sheikh Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi and once again highlights the importance of reading history and rediscovering the extended roots of societies in different cultures. The historical novel offers key insights into the identity, existence, and a comprehensive picture of the formation of civilization in the region.
The work is based on an in-depth study of historical data by the ruler of Sharjah and an assessment of its roots, historical value and distinctive features. His Highness used the compare and contrast methodology of writing, relying on credible and authenticated documents to reconstruct historical events objectively.
After the book signing, His Highness toured the exhibition inspecting the stalls of participating publishing houses. His Highness reviewed the latest works of Emirati authors in literary, cultural and scientific genres, among others.
The Sharjah leader also visited the EWU booth, reviewed the latest works of Union members and learned about the efforts undertaken by EWU to help Emirati writers advance their skills.
His Highness then visited the booths of EBF 2022 attendees, Kalimat Group, Emirates Publishers Association Manassah Platform, Medad Publishing & Distribution, Al Hudhud Publishing and Distribution and Poetry Academy, and learned about their latest books . During this tour, the Ruler of Sharjah discussed with exhibitors ways to advance the Emirati publishing industry.
What to expect at EBF 2022
The four-day event highlights the works of 970 Emirati authors and creators and offers the public the opportunity to view 1,400 titles from 26 local publishers, institutions and cultural initiatives.
The book fair aims to stimulate a cultural movement of Emirati books and authors, boost the presence of local talent in literary events and encourage younger generations to be part of the emirate’s thriving literary scene by advancing their writing skills in different genres including short story, novel, poetry and essay. It also aims to encourage all members of society to revise and acquire Emirati credentials, and nurture a love of research and reading.
EBF 2022 brings together scholars like Ali Al Abdan, Dr Hamad Ben Saray, Sheikha Al Mutairi, Ahmad Al Assam, Amal Al Sahlawi, Awad bin Hasoum Al Darmaki, Salha Obaid, Eman Al Yousuf, Alia Al Mansoori and Mona Alraisi in discussions on several cultural topics, including the presence of the Emirati writer on the world stage and the creative journeys of Emirati writers and intellectuals.
The book fair provides a platform for publishers, authors and intellectuals to network, showcase the works of emerging writers and celebrate the creative journeys of literary talent in the UAE.
The inauguration of the book fair took place in the presence of Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, president of the International Association of Publishers (IPA); Sheikh Salem bin Abdul Rahman Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Office of the Ruler of Sharjah; HE Abdullah bin Touq, Minister of Economy of the United Arab Emirates, HE Hessa Bint Essa Buhumaid, Minister of Community Development of the United Arab Emirates; HE Jameela Al Muhairi, Minister of State for Public Education of the United Arab Emirates, as well as heads of local departments, civil servants, writers and several media professionals.
