Simu Liu is the star of Marvel Shang Chi franchise now, but when he first arrived in Hollywood, Simu’s love of Marvel almost immediately shoved him into the streets. While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Simu Liu told a story about first coming to the (very) famous Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles as a broke actor, and meeting ‘Spider-Man’ in the form of a a local street artist. The only problem is that Simu Liu didn’t know he would have to pay for the fun.
“My very first trip to Hollywood, I had no money in my name,” Liu told guest host Chelsea Handler. “I was meeting a manager I’d never met, we were communicating over email, and he was like ‘Yeah, I guess I’ll sign you. “So…I didn’t have the money to get me a hotel, so I booked myself a hostel right off of Hollywood Boulevard, because that was the only real area of LA I knew, I was like ‘Yeah I want to be in Hollywood!’
And I show up at Hollywood Boulevard and… I’m having a good time and… this guy dressed as Spider-Man walks up and he’s like, ‘Do you want a picture?’ and I was like, ‘Oh cool, people in LA are so nice!’ And so he takes my phone, he takes pictures of me, and then he takes pictures of us, in a selfie, and then he goes, “That’ll be twenty bucks for Spider-Man.” “”
It was an expensive prospect for Liu to consider, given how broke he was at the time:
“I just arrived, I had so little money to spend. Don’t forget I’m staying in a hostel – I’m staying in a bed with nine other guys…but yeah…I ended up paying the guy: I told him about ten bucks. So I’m like, ‘Man, what are you doing? I’m so poor you have no idea!”
Handler brought up the intriguing notion of this Spider-Man street performer realizing he took a photo with Shang-Chi. It would be awesome (and oh so petty) if Simu Liu tracked down this guy and gave him a bill to be in a picture with an international Marvel movie star.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings airs on Disney+.
