The McArthur Library Delivers a Summer of Mayhem, Murder, and Mystery

What a great summer so far, cool, dry, lovely. Mine has been filled with hiking, biking and kayaking and of course, great books! Some of my favorite authors have released titles recently; Paul Doiron (Mike Bowditch series), Linda Castillo (Kate Burkholder series), David Rosenfelt (Andy Carpenter series), Elly Griffiths (Ruth Galloway series). Of course, I really, really like cop shows. Nothing I like better than getting into a series of the first volume. If you like mysteries or historical fiction, now is your chance to meet a fantastic author.

McArthur Library will host Karen Odden on Monday, July 18 at 6:30 p.m. for an in-person lecture. We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to welcome a USA Today bestselling author to the library. It was pure coincidence that Odden would travel to New England and offered to come to Biddeford to deliver his talk “Mayhem, Mystery and Murder in 1870s London”.

When we formally engage an author to speak at the library, I read at least one of the author’s works. With Odden, I didn’t read them, I devoured them. I read three of his books in one week, starting with “Down a Dark River”, the first in the Inspector Michael Corravan series. And I can’t wait for the second volume to come out this fall.

For me, the best crime novels are the ones with likable characters. If I care about a character, then I want to see how it ends and I can forgive the technical writing details. “Down a Dark River” by Karen Odden has it all. Great writing, great characters, and a plot absolutely rich in Victorian detail. The book is delicious and I wish I hadn’t rushed my reading, I would have liked to savor it.

The library has purchased all of its titles so that readers have the opportunity to consult them before the conference. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event. If you need more information, please don’t hesitate to contact Melanie at the McArthur Library.

There is also other good news! The library is approaching pre-pandemic numbers. The staff are delighted to see new faces and familiar faces. Summer learning is in full swing for all ages. Stop by to discover our new disc golf sets, our memory maintenance kits or our lawn games as well as the many books, films and CDs. We also strengthened our digital collections in Hoopla and Cloud Library. If you’re looking for a specific title, give us a call and we’ll do our best to get it to you quickly (sometimes within minutes!). Stay tuned for more summer activities.
