The Passageway’s New Shared Horror Universe Is Like Nothing You Could Imagine

In June, Bone Orchard Mythos by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino kicks off with The Passageway, an original graphic novel from Image Comics.

This summer, The Myth of the Bone Orchard from Picture Comicsa shared universe of horror, starts with The passage. This original graphic novel, written by Jeff Lemire with illustrations by Andrea Sorrentino, is the duo’s opening salvo Bone Orchard Myth, which will unfold over the next few years in a series of graphic novels and miniseries, all published by Image Comics. The book will go on sale in print and digital comic book stores on June 15 and in bookstores on June 21. Lemire promises “horror stories that take readers to places they could never have imagined.”

Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino met for the first time green arrow, during DC’s New 52 era, giving the character a darker side than he had had in many years. The race proved popular with fans and critics alike, and in 2018 the duo delivered Gideon Falls, a stunning, award-winning horror comic. Lemire and Sorrentino’s follow-up series, Primordialdebuted in 2021, duplicating Gideon Fallsa hit with critics and fans alike. Now Lemire and Sorrentino are preparing for The Myth of the Bone Orchard, their most ambitious project to date. The shared horror universe debuts on Free Comic Book Day this year with The Prelude to the Bone Orchard Mythand a month later kicks off with The passagean original graphic novel.

A press release from Image Comics provides more information on the book, as well as a preview of advanced art, shared below. The story begins when a geologist named John – sent to a remote lighthouse to investigate mysterious happenings – finds a pit in the ground, a pit that seems never to end. As he tries to unravel the mystery of what lurks in the pit, he finds himself increasingly drawn to it. In the press release, Lemire called The passage his and Sorrentino’s “the most complete collaboration” to date, promising readers that the book will tell a “complete, dark and mysterious” story, but also set the tone for the rest of the Bone Orchard Myth. Likewise, Sorrentino was excited about the collaboration, saying he and Lemire had crafted a “complex mythology” for the Bone Orchard Myth. Sorrentino went on to say he couldn’t “wait for all this world building to slowly unfold” in the months and years to come. Enjoy a preview of The passage below:

Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino are one of the best writer/artist combos working in comics today. Their collaborations are truly epic – the duo have breathed new life into Green Arrow, capitalizing on the success of Arrow pivoting Oliver Queen in a darker direction that still honored the character. The duo’s follow-ups, Gideon Falls and Primordial, are masterpieces of horror and science fiction. Lemire and Sorrentino’s ambitions have always been huge, and now with the Bone Orchard Myth, they have set their sights higher than ever, creating an entire universe that will unfold before readers’ eyes. The passage refers to the pit that John finds at the beginning of the book, but the title also means that it is the entry point for readers into the Myth of the Bone Orchard.


Horror has a long history in comics and was a thriving genre before Comics Code Authority censorship banned key elements, leading to the supremacy of superhero stories. With The passageImage Comics may be presiding over a new renaissance for popular horror comics, especially with such a proven team at the helm.

The creative team of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino have created definitive works in a variety of genres, and now their most ambitious creation to date, The Myth of the Bone Orchard premieres in June with the release of The passage, from Image comics.
